Natural Sciences Guild Lecture | Drawing the Place We Live In
Join artists Nancy King and Mary Swanson for an engaging talk on their year-long project to depict nature in a cross-section of San Francisco. The sixteen-foot-long panoramic drawing Wild in Plein View depicts nine San Francisco habitats from the sea to the Bay: ocean cliffs, cypress forests, tule marshes, meadows, rocky outcrops, grasslands, oak woodlands, coastal scrub, and tidal wetlands. Braving
unpredictable Bay Area weather, King and Swanson worked together, each drawing half of the scene before them.
Hear their stories of observing curious corvids on the cliffs, coming across grazing goats near Heron’s Head Park, and watching the fascinating courtship rituals of grebes, all while creating a beautiful representation of the landscape and
wildlife of San Francisco.
