Plaster Prep
Next, the exposed top layer of fossil is prepared for plastering. It must be carefully cleaned of all loose debris.

To keep the plaster from sticking to the fossil bone, a layer of moist toilet paper is laid down first.

A Messy Job
Plastering begins. Batches of plaster are mixed in buckets. Burlap strips are dipped into the wet plaster and then carefully applied to the surface of the fossil. Several layers are applied for strength.

Just like putting a cast on a broken arm, plaster bandages are wrapped over the fossil bones to hold them in place during transport.
