Wintertime
in California is uniquely Californian. Newcomers, as well as long-time
residents, are delighted and surprised by the varied effects of
our short, mostly mild and rarely violent winter. The subtle seasons
and microclimates of the state are as diverse as the people that
inhabit it.
A photographer
and open-space advocate, Bob Walker (1952 1992) was committed
to capturing views of the local landscapes, documenting not only
their natural beauty, but also changes caused by urban development
and economic expansion. His photography of the East Bay Regional
Park District coupled with his tireless activism were crucial to
the protection of that area. Thanks to his efforts, the state park
that embraces Mount Diablo has grown from 1,500 to 20,000 unspoiled
acres.
The beautiful
images here are prints made from Walkers 35mm slides. They
represent a small sampling of over 30,000 photographs of California
made by Walker, all of which are in the care of the Museum, the
premier repository for the entire state.
