Teens make a difference.
Reaching out to teens may not be easy, but their participation is vital.
| It's
worth the effort to get teens involved, including those who may be labeled
"troublemakers." For example, on Jungle Hill, until we reached
out to the kids who paint graffiti on the wall, any effort to keep the wall
clean was doomed to failure. If teens don't see something in your project that interests them, it's going to be very hard to get them to participate. Try to find out what would appeal to them, so that they can enjoy getting involved and will value the results. On Jungle Hill we realized that it's hard to get neighborhood teens to come out for planting days or community meetings. However, when we tried field trips and a mural project, we had better luck. It took us more than a year of outreach, but that effort got the neighborhood an amazing mural (below). |
