What's So Great About Open Space?

Jungle Hill is one of the few places where kids in Oakland's Fruitvale District can play outdoors in nature.

Oakland's Fruitvale district is densely populated with a beautiful blend of people from all over the world. Some residents make a comfortable living, while others are poor.

In all of Oakland, Fruitvale has the highest percentage of children and youth. Yet the Fruitvale area has very little open space in which kids can explore nature or play outdoors: the Fruitvale district average of 0.68 acres per 1,000 people is less than half of Oakland's average, and is far less than the city's own recommendation of four acres of open space per 1,000 people. This means that Fruitvale's children and youth have few daily ties to nature.

Jungle Hill is a one-acre open space in the Fruitvale area. It is owned by the community, for the good of the community. A place like Jungle Hill is rare, and very important.
