Oakland Museum of California Completes Transformation, Announces New Membership, Admission Rates

(OAKLAND, CA)—The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) announces new admission and membership rates, effective fall 2013, coinciding with the completion of its multi-year renovation and transformation. Three permanent Galleries—California Art, California History, and, new in 2013, California Natural Sciences—highlight a multidisciplinary approach to telling the story of California, essentially combining three museums into one, with offerings unlike any other museum in the state. On August 31, OMCA opens Above and Below: Stories From Our Changing Bay—the first large-scale exhibition to be created from OMCA’s vast collections in history, natural sciences, and art since the Museum completed its comprehensive 2010-2013 transformation. Planned changes in admissions and membership rates make OMCA’s offerings possible, from educational programs and resources for Oakland schools, to offering free entertainment and family activities during Friday Nights @ OMCA, to stewarding the collection of over 1.8 million objects for the people of Oakland and the state of California.

Effective Wednesday, September 4, General Adult Admission to the Museum is $15, while admission for seniors and students with a current ID is $10. Year-round admission for ages 9 to 17 remains unchanged at $6, and children ages 8 and under are still free. The new regular late-night series Friday Nights @ OMCA, presented in collaboration with Off the Grid, offers half-price Museum admission for adults and free admission for ages 18 and under, every Friday from 5 to 9 pm. The weekly Friday Nights program and the monthly Free First Sundays program continue OMCA’s commitment to low or no cost accessibility to the Museum and its offerings.

OMCA Members always get in free to the Museum, and in the month of September, visitors are encouraged to join or renew early to lock in current lower rates. Effective October 1, basic Individual Membership rates begin at $75, with discounted rates for Seniors, Students, Educators, and Members living more than 90 miles outside the Museum’s zip code. OMCA Members receive a generous benefit package, including:
