Concert Series in August, October, November 2007

The Oakland Museum of California brings a three-month series of concerts to its gardens and theatre, beginning Sunday, August 19. The music and format vary each month, but all the concerts offer great music and a good time.

Sunday, August 19, 1-4 p.m.
Count Basie Tribute Orchestra,
under the direction of Angela Wellman. An afternoon of sun and “high steppin’’ in the museum’s courtyard gardens, featuring Count Basie’s swinging Kansas City sound played by the 17-piece Big Band from the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music (OPCMusic), with special guest Basie alum bassist John Heard. Food and beverages will be on sale. Enjoy one-of-a-kind crafts and children’s activities. Presented by the Oakland Museum of California and OPCMusic. Admission $20 general/$50 families (up to 4 people).


Saturday, October 13, 11 a.m.–8 p.m.
The Civil Rights Concert Series and Courage Awards National Tour.

Bryan, and Stuart Hanlon receive Courage Awards at 5 p.m. Advance tickets $25/$35 with a food plate. Tickets at door $35/$45 with a food plate. Presented with the Oakland Museum of California.

Friday, November 9, 6–10 p.m.
Dinner concert with Sarah Manning and Shatter the Glass.
A jam-packed evening featuring renowned jazz saxophonist Sarah Manning and her band (Art Hirahara on piano, Thomson Kneeland on bass, and Kyle Struve on drums), a gourmet dinner, and a post-concert dessert and champagne nightcap. Museum galleries are open all evening, so check out the exhibitions celebrating California College of the Arts centennial and Días de los Muertos. $60/concert, dinner, dessert and champagne nightcap; $40/concert and nightcap

The Oakland Museum of California is at Oak @ 10th Streets in Oakland, one block from the Lake Merritt BART. Museum is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 to 5; Sunday, noon to 5; first Friday of the month open until 9. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 seniors and students with ID, free for kids five and under, members, and Oakland City employees. Admission is free the second Sunday of the month.
