1.
CALL TO ORDER/INTRODUCTIONS – Sheryl Wong
Chair Wong called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.
2.
CHAIR’S REPORT – Sheryl Wong
Chair Wong thanked all for their support and said some trustees
have been contacted regarding serving on a committee and eventually
all trustees will be contacted to discuss and be assigned to
a committee.
Proposition 84 will be on the November ballot and if it passes
part of the funds, $ 1 million ???, will go to eligible institutions
such as the Oakland Museum. Chair Wong and Executive Director
Lori Fogarty met with the city’s lobbyist. A number of
organizations and museums have made contributions to the Proposition
84 campaign, but because of the MOA with the city, the foundation
cannot make a contribution to this campaign. However, trustees
can make personal contributions to the campaign if they wish,
and some members have already done so.
3. CAMPAIGN CABINET – Sheryl Wong
Chair Wong said the Cabinet has looked at top prospects for contributing to the
campaign and determined that by expanding the project it will be easier to
raise funds. The Cabinet also decided that $53 million would be the working
campaign goal. Each month of delay will add $80,000 in cost to the gallery
renovations. The gallery design completion is expected by the summer 2007.
The galleries will be closed in 2008 and reopened in 2009. It is important
to raise the bulk of the money within the next 18 to 24 months.
On a motion duly made and seconded (Chamberlin/Gyorfi), the
following resolution was unanimously adopted:
RESOLVED, the Oakland Museum of California Foundation endorses
the Campaign Cabinet recommendation. The Capital Campaign
Cabinet recommends a capital campaign
working
goal of $53 million, consistent with the project scope as outlined by the
Renovation Oversight Committee. This goal will be re-visited
at key milestones as fundraising
progresses.
Linda Larkin, Associate Director-Capital Campaign, reviewed
the timeline and goals reports distributed at the meeting.
Ms. Larkin said some leadership
prospects
have been identified. She also reviewed a draft of frequently asked questions
about the campaign and asked that members add questions they may have.
The committee will host members of the Women’s Board at the CCRC and is also planning
an event with Senior Curator Karen Tsujimoto.
4. RENOVATION
OVERSIGHT – Lance Gyorfi
Trustee Gyorfi reviewed the list of projects and the estimate cost of
$53 million for museum renovations. Mr. Gyorfi asked that the museum renovation
project budget of $53 million be approved.
On a motion duly made and seconded (Curtis/Harris), the following
resolution was unanimously adopted:
RESOLVED, that the Oakland Museum of California Board of Trustees
endorses the list of projects and scoping cost estimates
totaling $53 million for the museum’s
overall renovation as presented at the October 2006 board meeting. The Board
of Trustees establishes a project budge not to exceed $53 million.
