Ms. Nelson said staff is looking at ways to make the collections more accessible to visitors; ways to integrate education activities into the gallery space; and is considering visitor learning goals when planning the new gallery. The Irvine Foundation Artistic Innovation Fund grant involves the surveying of visitors and experimenting with prototypes. Visitors are invited to make connections to art in different ways after which their responses are evaluated.

Mr.de Guzman said the Art and Education Departments held three colloquia that covered issues related to language, technology, and collaborative practices. In addition, Mr. de Guzman and other staff visited the Detroit Institute of Art and the Denver Art Museum to look at how these museums integrated interpretive materials into their exhibitions museum-wide. Staff plans to visit the Dallas Museum of Art in September to look at how public programming is presented in that museum’s galleries.
