Guided tours of changing exhibitions are led by museum docents for elementary and up, as well as adults. For group tour information, call our docent office weekdays at 510-238-3514. American Sign Language tours are also available.

School Tours and Programs
Enhance your classroom curriculum with a field trip to the Oakland Museum of California! Bring your class on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

Please note: Advance reservations are required for groups of 10 or more to visit Please call the Docent Center, 510/238-3514. Due to space limitations we can not accommodate groups in the exhibition between the hours of 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

We offer three visiting options:

Tours



Visitors in the redwood forest exhibit in the Walk Across Califrnia exhibition.
Please note the art and history galleries are closed for renovations until 2009.

Appropriate for all ages. Museum docents lead school groups. Choose an introductory tour or special theme tour that will enrich your in-class activities. Students develop observation and inquiry skills as the experienced docents guide them in exploring museum objects and exhibits. Classes are divided into small groups to encourage student participation. Cost is $10 per class (up to 35 students) for Oakland schools. The cost for all other schools starts at $30 and depends on the size of the class. For more details or to schedule a tour call the Docent Office at 510-238-3514.

Weekend tours and tours for adults are available by request.

 

 

Programs

 

For K-12, we offer classes, performances, outreach activities and classroom materials. Our school programs can include a gallery tour followed by a directed learning session taught by artists, naturalists, educators or docents. These interactive programs engage students in exploring the art, history and ecology of California while building visual literacy and critical thinking skills. Costs for these programs vary; Oakland schools enjoy a reduced rate. To learn more and schedule a School Program, call the Education Office at510-238-3818.
